Why I decided to Do This.
When I started my online chat show Your Story in 2007 I started developing the skills to record and edit conversations. As much pleasure as it was to record the conversations that I had with people I had only just meet and publish them for the community to listen to I was also wondering about the stories that exist within my own family.
Without even giving it a moments thought I realised that my Uncle Bill, my father’s brother, was the perfect person to talk to about my own greater family history. Fortunatly Bill was one of the older children and would have the majority of the memories that still exist.
I contacted Bill, now at 88, the patriarch of my family and still active and telling the stories of his life in the same amusing and exuberant style that has made him the wag he is and asked if I could spend some time with him and record his memories.
For some two years I’ve been thinking “I should get up to Biloela and spend some time with Bill” but in February 2010 I decided to stop procrastinating and made the decision to go for a drive and as it turned out spent some 5 days with Bill and Judy recording what he was able to share with me of his memories over his 88 years.
This is a record of our conversations spanning a time in country Australia, where motorised vehicles were yet to become common place, electricity was still being rolled out and life was at a slower, simpler and harder pace.
I hope you enjoy these stories that Bill shared with me as much as I enjoyed listening to him tell me.
This site is not at all static and I intend to continue to contribute content as it becomes relevant and I would encourage anyone who visits and listens to these recordings to also contribute.
Although there are some interesting stories of life long ago, I realise that the bulk of these stories most probably will not be of great interest to the general public. However I hope that people who know Bill will find this information of interest, particularly his greater family and I encourage you to contribute and share your stories just as Bill has shared his memories.
You can do this in several ways.
- The easiest is to simply comment below each of the pages in the comment field about your thoughts of that particular item.
- Write down your thoughts and memories and email them to me and I’ll add a post of your content. (Images would also be appreciated)
Please enjoy the history, stories and humor of my uncle, Bill Kath.
